Men who have sex with men

In 2004-2005, ISDS in collaboration with the POLICY Project has conducted a qualitative research on men who have sex with men in Hanoi and their vulnerability with HIV infection. Since then, ISDS has consistently included issue of homosexuality in her research on gender and sexuality and started actively to partcipate in advocacy for rights and reduce stigma against MSM and transgenders.

Through VCSPA in 2009-2010 and through the Global Fund project, ISDS has supported establishment and development of various self-help groups of MSM.

In 2009, ISDS under the request of UNAIDS has developed a toolkit to guide actions for reducing stigma against MSM. The section on HIV related stigma towards MSM was adapted from the manual of the International AIDS Alliance to fit the context of Vietnam. The sections on gender and sexuality were developed by ISDS team. A series of trainings of trainers was conducted for government officials, NGO and CBO workers. The toolkit was well received by the organisations working with MSM and the community of MSM in Vietnam who later actively used it for the purpose of advocacy for MSM’s sexual rights, capacity building for MSM groups and clubs, and raising awareness of both the state and the society of the needs of social inclusion and rights protection of the MSM populations.

Professional staff of ISDS regularly collaborate with media to provide information on homosexuality, MSM and transgender for the public, increase awareness on the harmful consequences of stigma against those groups. ISDS also actively participate in advocacy for same sex marriage in Viet Nam.
