(Collected data in Son La province)

In November and December, 2008, Institute for Social Development Studies (the project implementing agency) was implemented collecting data for the Vietnam National Sexuality and Sexual Health Survey in 11 provinces/cities: Lang Son, Son La, Thai Binh, Ha Noi, Ha Tinh, Binh Dinh, Daklak, Da Nang, HCM, Binh Thuan, Vinh Long,  over 5,000 people was interviewed.

For the Institute for Social Development Studies, this study is the high-end continuation and expansion of its past projects on sexuality funded by the Ford Foundation since 2002.  The qualitative studies under these projects have already found deep changes in perceptions, values, and attitudes as well as behaviors of the people regarding sexuality.  If these changes are further confirmed with quantitative data, we will be in a much stronger position to advocate for policy changes and interventions regarding various sexuality-related areas.

Thus, it is the right time to have national data on key areas of sexuality of the Vietnamese people, particularly their sexuality knowledge, perceptions, attitudes, and practices.  These data can be made available through a carefully designed quantitative survey on sexuality that will be conducted nationwide.  So far, no research of this kind has ever been conducted in the country.  It is forseeable that the data collected from the survey, and the follow-up analysis, will be highly appreciated by various government ministries, research institutions, universities, development programs, international actors as well as the general public.

Project Overall Objective

The overall objective of this project is to produce an empirical foundation for a comprehensive understanding of the key issues of sexuality in Vietnam and the promotion of sexual rights and gender equality as indispensable factors for socio-economic and human development in Vietnam.
