In 2009, Institute for Social Development Studies (ISDS) and International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) with the financial support from USAID has developed and published the booklet “Basic information on drug addiction and stigma related to HIV.” The main purpose of this booklet is to provide basic information on the linkage between stigma toward the injecting drug users and HIV, and to provide suggestions on confronting this issue.
In this book, the authors team give their efforts to answer these questions: What do drug use and drug addict mean? Is there any different between these terms? Why do people use drug and why it is difficult to give up using drug? How do IDUs get HIV? Why do they often share needles and syringes? How stigma toward drug use increase HIV transmission? The part of the booklet provides information of the Law, policies and the intervention programs for the drug users.
The booklet uses illustrative photos of the real IDUs with their consent to appear in the publication. Until now, they have found their life’s meaning and tried to contribute their best to their families as well as to the society. All the photos was taken by photographer Pham Hoai Thanh.
This booklet is published in Vietnamese and English and is now available at ISDS’s library. This booklet is available for educational and communicational work of individuals, families, organizations.
